The 685 series steam locomotives are the superheated steam, simple expansion version of the earlier 680 series of the Italian State Railways (FS). They share the same general mechanical layout and dimensions. Designed by the FS Technical Office in Florence, 241 units were built with Walschaerts valve gear and 30 with Caprotti valve gear (these were initially classified as the 686 series), entering service from 1912 onward.

The 685 locomotive undoubtedly represents the pinnacle of Italian steam traction technology. Not surprisingly, this machine, capable of delivering excellent performance in the hands of skilled engineers, was affectionately nicknamed "The Queen." Units from this series served actively until the 1960s.

Rivarossi accurately reproduces units from both the first series (numbered 685 001 to 066) and the second series (numbered 685 067 to 106), both featuring the early "short" boiler version and accurately depicting the differences between the two series.
